To sign up for emails go to https://tinyurl.com/HNart I grew up in Michigan where my family would take camping vacations around the state. I loved to draw and paint and find ways to express myself creatively. I admired a variety of other artists from Michelangelo to Monet to Norman Rockwell. Wanting to use my artistic skills I earned a BFA with an emphasis in graphic design at Western Michigan University, graduating in 1998. Following graduation, I lived in Asia for a year. I loved traveling around the area – pastels, and sketchbook in hand – taking in the culture and colors of the places I visited. Following that, I moved to Orlando, Florida in 2000, and took a job as a graphic designer. In 2003, I toured several National Parks in the Southwest where the mountains, rock formations, arches, rivers, and canyons inspired me. I set a goal for myself to complete one piece each week. I worked in oil pastel which allowed me to work quickly, inexpensively and simply. Over the years I worked with oil pastels, dried gourds, with mixed media, wax, and this past year acrylic on canvas has become my medium of choice. I work from photographic reference and enjoy creating pieces with bold colors and a loose realism. I seek to find beauty wherever I am, which has lead to creating work inspired by Downtown Orlando, Sanford and other local locations. This past July I was able to once again visit the Southwest, returning with hundreds of photographs that I’ve started to explore with my paintings. My artwork aims to reflect my deep belief that we are all created in the image of a creative God. The world, for me, is a place of inexhaustible complexity, variety, detail, and beauty that extends infinitely beyond function – in beauty, I sense the reverberations of hope. Painting allows me to slow down and reflectively ponder the beauty around me. Beauty planted within my heart and springs forth in hope produces in its time, the fruit of longing – a profound longing for this world to more fully reflect the goodness of God and our Edenic beginnings. Besides painting, I also enjoy interior design, hiking, biking, reading, playing games, and spending time with my family. I hope to one day add more of our National Parks Stickers to the back of my car and be able to travel internationally.
