Description
Bucket list, dreams, and goals are things compiled, shared and sought after. Some feel impossible. I first visited Zion National Park in 2003, knowing little about the park. It was gorgeous, yet we really saw just a portion of what the park had to offer. I fell in love with the Southwest on that trip and made several oil pastels off photos I had taken.
About a year ago, knowing we’d be in Colorado for a few weeks, I started to explore and see if we could take on some vacation days and visit a few National Parks in Utah. I came across many blogs on Pinterest of must-see hikes at the different parks. For Zion, it seemed the must do hike was Angel’s Landing. Reading about it, seeing photos and videos made my stomach churn, and I was also concerned about the safety of myself and our kids. I really wanted to see the views from the top but didn’t want to do the hike that boasted thousand foot drop-offs on both sides.
Then I read about the hike to Observation Point. A higher viewpoint, that actually looks down making Angels Landing seem small. It is a strenuous hike from the valley floor, two miles further, hundreds of feet higher than Angel’s Landing. It didn’t seem as scary, as the drop-offs were only on one side. Yet it too seemed impossible. Could I do it, could our kids, we’d need to take the shuttle in, bring along enough water, snacks, sunscreen, start really early to avoid the heat of the summer day.
And then my internet research and my husband’s talking with a few locals lead to a breakthrough. There was a different route to get to Observation Point. A trailhead that started not at the bottom of the valley, but outside the park, at the top of the canyon. A hike that was shorter, and had only a few hundred feet of elevation change. Armed with maps and directions we found ourselves on some dusty dirt roads that lead to the trailhead. It still took a few hours to get to the point, but the view was incredible. What seemed so overwhelming and impossible became possible. (We even encountered a few hikers on our way in who were running the trail.)
