Description
I’d place myself firmly in the suburbanite category. While I don’t love driving, I’m thankful to have a car and be in charge of where I go and when. I like driveways and parking lots. Parallel parking has never been a strength. Downtown feels intimidating, I’ve got to think ahead about where I will park, and whether I’ll have to pay for parking. I think of the people who live downtown as the young cool people. (Not sure I ever fit that category but I definitely don’t fit in now.) In my mind, the people there aren’t intimidated by crowds, and they make having a dog and living in an apartment work. They want to be close to the action, and Friday nights are in some hotspot, not on the couch with a good book or movie.
What does this all have to do with this painting? Not much, except the dozens of swans that call this little lake home, remind me of the people downtown. Surrounded by the city they are at ease, beautiful…but don’t get too close, they are territorial and will bite. (Okay, I can’t say that those who love life downtown are unfriendly, it’s not my community, so it’s my projection. Intimidating in their beauty and belonging.)
